Waunarlwydd 39 Gowerton 17

Match Report

This was the first match between the two club's for fifteen season and it is good to see the teams playing each other again following Gowerton's rise up the leagues in recent seasons. With Alan Pope and Dan Fox unavailable and Matthew Mason on the bench Waun started with Jay Williamson in midfield. Recruit Lee Diiullio was at scrum half. Steffan Jones was also unavailable so Matthew Gorman was at prop.

Gowerton missed an early penalty before a brawl in midfield ended up with a Gowerton player being red carded. A Waun attack ended with them losing possesion before Gowerton missed a second penalty. With a man advantage Waun were dominating possession but Gowerton's defence was good. Sion Evans and Dan Moyle created opportunities but finishing was poor. Eventually the pressure told as Lee Evans kicked a penalty and missed a longer attempt a few minutes later. A rare Gowerton attack followed but Waun's defence was good. However Waun were penalised and the scores were levelled . A break by Tom Evans supported by Josh Hammett should have brought the opening try but wrong option taken. Gowerton though lost a player to a yellow card and eventually wing Shane Harries went over for a try in the corner which was converted by byLee Evans. The pressure continued and Lee Evans kicked a second penalty. A run by Jordan Clayfield down the left set up another opportunity but the ball was dropped whwn play was switched to the right.

The visitors started the second half well but Lee Evans relieved the pressure with a run and kick downfield. Waun then had a period of pressure in the Gowerton 22 and eventually Sion Evans was driven over the line. Gowerton launched an attack from their own half but the ball was turned over and Dan Moyle raced away to score a try under the posts. A run down the left by Matthew Mason created a position for Tom Evans to add another try on the right. With the game all over as a contest Waun switched  off and allowed Gowerton to score two late tries and only added one themselves through a second try for Tom Evans following a run by Josh Hammett.

So a good start to the season for Waun with two wins though performances will need to improve if the side is to finish in the top half. Next game is away to Felinfoel.
