Bridgend Athletic v Waunarlwydd | 21st Jan 2018

Waunarlwydd having the majority of possession and territory throughout the match, but were made to pay for mistakes by quick counter attacking rugby. Like a scorned spouse in a court battle, Bridgend were superb at turning defense into attack pouncing on any mistakes and milking them for all they were worth.

Waunarlwydd started well putting pressure on Bridgend and scoring early with Rhys Cherry from a rolling maul 5yds out. Bridgend answered back with a penalty and an interception on the halfway line for Bridge Centre Stuart Ellis to race clear to make the score 10 - 7. Waunarlwydd were then guilty of two poor clearance kicks which Bridgend were quick to pounce on, returning the kicks well and taking advantage of the space to score two good trys.

HT  Bridgend Athletic 24 - 10 Waunarlwydd

After a long wait for Bridgend to return from the dressing room (a few players clearly needing to re-apply hair gel), Waun applied pressure early to gain 3 points but quickly gave the points away handing Bridgend an easily kicked penalty. Athletic then scored the try of the game, turning the ball over on their on 5 yd line after Waun nearly scored through Lee Evans. A quick pick up seen Bridge wing make massive ground before being tackled, he was able to offload and after a couple of passes a crossfield kick led to fullback Robin Davies crossing for a lesson in turning defense into attack. Waun had the final say showing resilience and determination to score the final try.

Ft Bridgend Athletic 32 - 18 Waunarlwydd

Waunarlwydd played well throughout but little mistakes in key areas cost them dearly. Wings Alan Pope and Sam Pridgeon both having good games, but this weeks special mention goes to the front three who had a good battle with Bridgends front row at scrum time and in the loose. Waun have improved in this area more than any other over the last few seasons, through lots of training and hard graft taking a few beatings along the way. Players and coaches deserve respect for the work ethic and showing faith in players to improve, rather than like many other teams choosing the get out of jail option of going passive. Wauns front row who followed advice given to them by their parents "the more you weigh the harder you are to kidnap", have been in excellent form and continue to improve through the season.
